I think some people just hate whomever is successful or they see a group of people flocking to something and want to be contrarian about it regardless if they have checked it out or not.

If Apple has a "cult" following you can't tell me Andorid OS devices don't have a "cult" following themselves. There is no difference at all except Apple makes a better product.

Oh and Nokia is technically top dog I believe. Maybe not in the US but overall they are on top.

Apple is the "mainstream." Android is a cult for geeks. Can one imagine giving an Android device to one's mother or child?

"If you want porn, get an Andorid."

what makes apple mainstream?... a phone! excuse me...a phone that doesnt allow porn. Apple has always been in the niche market. The iPhone has blown things up a bit. Micro$oft is more mainstream if you look at Apple and not the iPhone. I dont love porn and I love my iPhone but I play with my work colleagues Droid X and it rocks... and it doesnt rock because of porn. So defensive about the purity of apple and Droids porn!!!...thats a cult personality if I ever seen one.

I do find it funny that Fandroid people call us Fanboys but yet they drink the Google Kol-Aid more than we drink the Apple Kool-Aid. Gotta love a good hypocrite!

I ask again, can you imagine giving an Android phone to your mother or your child? It is not simply about the porn, though that is certainly a reason not to give it to mom, it is the nature of the interface. The droid droid is expected to know about, exploit, and, yes, compensate for the generality, flexibility, and complexity of Android. It is about the operating system, not the application. Geeks value all of this. That is one reason they hate Steve. He built a computer that compensates for people instead of the other way around.

Admit it; one reason that you like the android is that it gives you the opportunity to demonstrate that you are smart enough to use it while most people are not. Geeks and droids love that. If any four year old can use it, then where is the value in all your hard won special knowledge? A computer that one does not even need to know how to read or write, much less code in C, in order to use is an affront to all that is geek.

I am sure that many people would describe me as a geek or a droid; afterall, I had a Treo and enjoyed configuring and managing it. I did not even begrudge the third of the device time and capacity that was devoted to this otherwise wasteful activity. Hell, I learned to code on a low-serial-number IBM 704 and made hardware changes to my own IBM 650.

However, that does not mean that I believe that that is the way to design a computer for the masses. I appreciate Steve's genius. I appreciate that he wants to direct the power of the computer into making it useful by mom and the kids, even at the expense of the generality and flexibility so cherished by the geeks, droids, and hackers.

Mom and the kids value the application. That is where they want to invest their learning time, the game, not installing and configuring it. Steve has always known that there are more of them than of us. He knew it when he put Visicalc on the Apple II and the GUI on the Macintosh. He does it better, he knows it, and that is why he, not you, is paid the big bucks. Look down your geeky nose at him all you like; he will just laugh all the way to the bank.

No, I really don't. I am the oldest guy in the room and I "really" do not have to do anything I do not want to. :p

I agree... I am a geek myself and miss the effort I put into my Treo 600, 650w/ROM Tool, and 700p. I miss my Blackjack II. The iPhones almost effortless. I could do so much damage with my blackjack. I had so many plug-INS, there was no content I could not access on the net. I hacked with the registry. It was fun. I do miss that. I love my iPhone but feel like someones holding my hand when I use it.

That's Steve! He is behind the curtain.

Happens all over the tech world...having been an apple lover for about 10 years now and now on my 5th mac computer, ive seen the PC world hate on everything from the colors of a macbook to the magnetic charge cord. People seem to want to jump on a torch wielding band wagon to feel like a part of something...which is funny because they typically accuse apple people of being bandwagon riders.

The way i look at it is this...if im going to ride a band wagon, might as well be a pretty damn awesome wagon, right?
