I don't really have any buying tips I would say join a bunch of forums for each camera and ask about their strengths and weaknesses and you can also see pictures shot with them. I have a Nikon D40 which is an entry level DSLR, the shots I've shot with the regular kit lens and my new Nikon 55-200 lens are amazing so I ofcourse would be biased for Nikon. I've attached some re-sized let me know if you wanna see some full res.

I've never used a Canon DSLR and recently purchased a Nikon D90. I love it! A comparable camera with Canon was gonna be a few hundred dollars more and that affected my decision to go with Nikon. I currently only have the 18-105 kit lens, but I'm hoping to get a 50mm prime lens for Christmas So far I've had no complaints about my D90. Excellent camera. You can see some of my photos on my flickr page:

Thanks for both of your replies.
llofte: I love that photo of the dog in the snow, even though I don't believe in dogs wearing clothes. Jkjk. My ex has a yorkie and put her in a hoodie a couple days ago, because it hit 60 here, so I guess I'm accustomed to it.
Ipheuria: Those are nice. I don't think I even need to see the high res.

Well it was around 30 degrees out when I took this pic! The jacket makes a HUGE difference in his body temperature!

Let us know what you buy and feel free to share some shots. The D40 was good for me because I came from a point and shoot but the D60 is now the price I paid for my D40 so if I had to do it all over I probably would have gotten that instead. A UV filter is good for the lens, the grip for the body and also there are screen protectors too. I've seen such nice shots now that it's fall with all the colors but never have the time to get them

I bought the Nikon D5000. I love it. I am still reading the book. It does sooooooo much more than I am doing with it right now.

Here are a couple of shots.

Can't upload shots for some reason. Working on it.:o

On the high end Canon's are better, on the mid and low end the two are comprable. I prefer Nikon because of the way their bodies feel in my hands.

I don't think you can go wrong either way. I have had a Canon DSLR for the last several years, and I still love it, it still works and still takes great photos. It's really more about the lenses than anything. If you already have lenses that are compatible with a DSLR make...stay with that brand.
