Why do you need to use your bakery to make this religious/moral stand? Do you understand what I'm saying here? I'm not saying there shouldn't be a religious right. I'm saying why would you want to use your business, you know, the thing that makes you money, to prove a point that you're against homosexuality? Great, you just alienated a group of people and lost that money, then, you got a bad reputation out of it. End up closing your business? For what? Congratulations on the "stand" you made. You came out with no bakery. Spare me your "no standard" argument. Someone walks into your bakery and would like you to bake them a cake. Big deal. It's not like David Duke asked him to make him a birthday cake.
If they are truly religious/moral beliefs, you cannot separate them from who you are or what you do. Do you understand what I am saying? It’s not about choosing to do or not do something and then hiding behind morality/religion. It’s about living your life with the conviction of your beliefs. If the views that you hold are integral to who you are, you cannot simply pick them up and lay them down - it’s WHO YOU ARE.
So you wouldn’t make a birthday cake for David Duke? Why not? In your scenario, it’s all about the money. Wouldn’t his money also help to make you profitable? How is your not wanting to bake a birthday cake for David Duke any different from another baker not wanting to bake a cake for a gay couple? Either a stand is a stand or it isn't. And if it’s about the money and turning a profit, who cares where the money comes from?
Now take it a step further. Now, instead of a baker, who, arguably could bake a cake and be done with it, you’re a wedding photographer. Now you have to be intimately involved in a wedding ceremony that you are opposed to on moral or religious grounds. But instead of baking a cake in your bakery and having it picked up and delivered to a gay wedding, you have to actually attend a gay wedding (remember the moral/religious opposition) and be an actual part of it. What if David Duke (your example) asked you to do a personal portrait or family photos?
Clearly we’re not ever going to agree on this, so there’s not much point to continuing. And personally, I have no skin in the game. Do what you want. If you’re gay, be gay. If you’re morally/religiously opposed to homosexuality, be opposed/offended/whatever. My point is simply this: there is NO true equal rights. In order to extend "rights" to one individual/group/segment of society, you run the risk of limiting the rights of another person/group/segment. And there is no way to get around it.
Just like in War Games, with global thermal nuclear war, there is no winner. And for many, this subject is approaching that level.
Have a good evening.
