Apple is spending a “duck” ton of cash on original content creation. Individual projects like Pachinko and upcoming Masters of the Air, among others, are costing north of 200 million individually. Signing studio deals that have never been seen before, cost wise. This open purse strategy is attracting Hollywood’s top production people and biggest acting names. So it shouldn’t be surprising AppleTV+ is hitting impressive marks like 3 out the top 10 streamed shows for last week. However, from a profitability standpoint, AppleTV+ so far must be the biggest financial loss in Apple’s history (not counting when they were Apple Computer). Apple has a reputation as a company that axes money losers relatively quickly. Based on that, on this one. Apple must have a long term plan for profitability in the streaming market. I expect this plan extends into movie theater releases as well as more sports broadcasting (along with an eventual hike from the current 5$ a month).
The benefit of making 100 billion in annual profit obviously has its advantages. For better or worse this is going to squeeze the content streaming market and likely cause consolidation. It’ll be interesting to see it play out.
