A coalition of civil, political and human rights groups have penned an open letter to Apple, calling on the company to stop enabling censorship and surveillance in China.
Interesting, but very unlikely to happen. Why? Because Apple would be committing corporate suicide if it obeyed this coalition, which would anger China and make it lose access to 1.2 billion potential Chinese customers/market.
While the coalition does have a point, what many people don’t realise is that the HKMap app was not only being used by bystanders to avoid riots, but also by rioters to attack or evade the police. It’s not one sided.
