    There is not much change in the iPhone models, so I started to only upgrade my phone evey three years.

    That appears to be the cycle that Apple is moving to so it works out for you.

    If you are looking at upgrading soon next year is probably going to be a major refresh for iPhone.

    i don't believe this iphone will be any "big step" in the series. i would wait for the "iphone 8".
