If you're the lucky owner of a new iPhone 6s or 6s Plus, you may be wondering what to do about your Apple Watch. For those unfamiliar, while Apple's smartwatch accesses much of its information from iCloud, it backs up Health data, app data, and the like to its paired iPhone. In the Apple doc linked to in the article, Apple says Un-pair, then iphone backup. Perhaps it is saving the watch backup directly to iCloud and that will work BUT wouldn't it be safer to do the phone backup after the watch backup just in case it is Watch phone App data? And also safer since Apple is giving a different order.

Related, there is discussion on the webs about backups being made on current phones running 9.0.1 where the new phones will have 9.0. Some claim that for the first time younwill be able to restore from a newer version backup. Have not read any confirmation on this from anyone who has done it.
