For 3G speeds that's true. But as carriers start to deploy voice over LTE, the legacy CDMA and gsm service will not be needed (as much at least). Eventually that spectrum used for gsm and CDMA will be "re-farmed" to LTE on all the carriers. So maybe Sprint sees a big benefit in being able to combine their and tmobile's LTE bandwidths or they are anticipating the demise and repurposing of the gsm and CDMA spectrum. Just speculating though.
