Can you send a self destructing iMessage without using an app

My ex claims he got anonymous text messages to his iPhone 6 that self destructed within seconds. He said this happened 3 times and all 3 times these messages gave him information about me that nobody could know unless they looked through my phone. I think that this technology doesn't exist. His phone is not jailbroken. He has no apps that utilize self destructing messaging (confide? Snapchat, etc). Has anyone heard of this?
