How do I register a contact in iMessage on my iPad

When I attempt to end a text to a non iOS Device, the contact's name will appear in red and will not send the message. It was working fine until I backed it up to my desktop.

That is because you cannot send an iMessage or an SMS message to a non-iOS device using an iPad.
