How do I add contacts to the iMessage feature

I have friends with iPhones and want to communicate with them through my iPad. How?

1. Make sure the iPad is connected to the Internet either via Wi-Fi or cellular data.
2. Enable iMessage on your iPad and then sign in to it.
3. Tap on the Messages app.
4. Enter the recipient's phone number in the appropriate field.
5. Type your message
6. Select to send it.
