What happens to iMessages when phone lost

Before iMessage, when a phone was lost and de-activated, any messages sent while the phone was deactive would all come after my new phone was activated with the same phone number. Is this the case with iMessage??

Mine came through as text messages after my iPhone wouldn't turn on
