How do you change the tone for iMessage, SMS, email and social apps

I read on a site that:

"You can now set different tones for SMS, iMessage, email and other various social services.* Those sounds can also be customized by caller ID."

How do you actually do this?

*You must have iOS 6 or higher.*

If you go to your settings, there should be an option called "sounds". Click on that and you should see "Ringers and Alerts" and then "Sounds". It will say "Ringtone", "New Mail", etc.. You just click next to each thing and you can choose a built in sound or one that you may have downloaded from the iTunes store. You can also make custom ringtones. You can also customize these by ging into the individual contact and choose a tone from there.
