If you recently upgraded your iTunes to 10.0.1 you may have noticed a few new features. The main new feature is the ping sidebar. However Apple snuck another new feature in under our radar. They have added a ping drop-down menu that shows up in your iTunes library once a song is selected. If you fail to see the use in this new feature there is a simple way to get rid of it.

    For Mac:
    1. Quit iTunes, and open Terminal.
    2. Copy and paste this into a single line: defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown -bool TRUE
    3. Hit return.
    4. Restart iTunes. The Ping drop-down will be gone.

To bring it back if you change your mind later, repeat the command with FALSE instead of TRUE at the end.
    For PC:
    "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt hide-ping-dropdown 1
    "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt show-store-link-arrows 1
    "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt disablePingSidebar 1

If you're on a 64-bit version of windows, use this instead:

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt hide-ping-dropdown 1
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt show-store-link-arrows 1
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt disablePingSidebar 1
Will you be utilizing this new Ping feature or will you be taking advantage of these instructions to get rid of yet another in your face ping update? Sound off after the break!

Changing the Genius Sidebar to the Ping Sidebar without the ability to choose between the two is an arrogant move by apple.

You can hide the ping bar as well. Right below the ping sidebar on the lower right is a button you can click to hide the sidebar.

Apple is really pushing ping thats for sure. They need to add to it before it becomes really good.

Yes, but what if someone wants the genius sidebar back. I am not upgrading for this reason.

This is a great post man!

However, there's one thing I would have changed on the last line, wherein you used the word 'utilizing' twice in the same sentence: 'Will you be utilizing this new Ping feature or will you be utilizing these instructions to get rid of yet another in your face ping update? Sound off after the break!'

I would have gone with another word that describes the same action. i.e., 'taking advantage of', or even something more simple, like 'using'.

    Just a thought

    Great post

Right but you can still hide ping and bring up a genius mix easily.

    For Windows users:

    commands are:

    "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt hide-ping-dropdown 1
    "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt show-store-link-arrows 1
    "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt disablePingSidebar 1

If you're on a 64-bit version of windows, use this instead:

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt hide-ping-dropdown 1
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt show-store-link-arrows 1
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt disablePingSidebar 1

Folks...bear in mind that what these commands do will not, unfortunately, completely remove "Ping the Obnoxious". What they will do is:

    1. Hide the Ping sidebar (which you can do from within iTunes also).
    2. Eliminate the Ping dropdown buttons that appear next to any of the music in your library when you select a song.
    3. Restore the old-style arrows in your music list that will, when clicked, take you to the album listing in the iTunes store.

These commands will not remove the Ping choice from the left hand iTunes store menu. The only way to do that at present is to disable the iTumes store in Parental Controls. Of course this will also make it impossible to sync apps with your mobile devices.

The other thing they won't do, and what Apple really needs to give us back is the option to use the Genius sidebar instead of the "Ping the Obnoxious" sidebar. Keep hammering Apple about this and MAYBE they'll give it back to us.
