I have a late 2012 imac that I wiped and it now has mountain lion on it but when I click on About this Mac it does not show the OS version. And when I click update OS it starts and the stops with a 102 error.

Anyone have a workaround?

Thanks!

The steps taken via the following link should suffice. If not, you can try one of the numerous 3rd-party Mac recovery tools found via a web search that claim to be able to fix the issue.

Try installing the most recent combo update for OS X Mountain Lion: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1676?locale=en_CA. This contains all the system files, including fixes for older TLS libraries, which are used to validate software updates.

You might want also try to install the latest version of macOS that computer supports which is macOS Catalina 10.15.7.
Here's a link from Apple where to get those https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT211683
