My iMac froze on me and I force shut it down, I turn on the iMac to find a folder with a question mark.

I have an 2009 iMac that is running Lion and I would like to downgrade to Snow Leopard. What can I do?

Backup your data, music photos and any other important information to an external hard drive or a clod service. Afterwards, insert your OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard DVD and then then reboot your Mac.

Yeah that's not working. I'm trying to download Lion to my mackbook pro from the mac app store. Nothing happens when I click download. So now I have another roadblock. If I could download Lion I would add the file needed to install Lion to a thumb drive. Then plug it into the iMac. Nothing is easy...

When I was troubleshooting my MacBook, I erased the hard drive, and because I still had the original install disk that contained OS X Leopard, I was able to use it and then install Snow Leopard from its install disk as well. From there, I was able to install Lion, then Mountain Lion and finally Mavericks. My point is this. You can get back to Snow Leopard if you have the right tools. In this case, you'll need the Leopard disk or so it seems.

If you get a ? on startup on your iMac. This could mean it's not recognizing the internal drive as a start up drive.
