Avoiding duplicate airdropped photos during sync

How do I get photos from my iPhone to my iPad without duplicating them? If I'm somewhere with poor internet service (by wifi or cellular) and I want to work on a photo on my iPad that was taken on my iPhone, I can share it to my iPad via Airdrop. However, when my iPad later connects to the internet, the photo will be duplicated when my photos sync with iCloud. Is there a way to avoid this duplication?

Unfortunately, I don't think there's a way.

When a photo is shared, it is a completely new file that's sent over - usually without personally identifiable metadata such as location. There used to be a feature that helps identifying duplicates in a photo library, but I can't find it anymore :(
