I am setting up a child apple ID for my son and saw that he has an apple ID in gamecenter. Is that different for a standard Apple ID for logging in and purchasing on itunes?

Welcome to iMore! It can be the same. My Apple ID and Game Center ID are the same. But they don't have to be. It's easier to keep up with if it's all the same. My Wife and I share my iTunes ID. But iCloud, iMessage and Facetime ID's are our own. And Game Center too. Sharing the iTunes ID allows us to share the same purchases at no additional cost. With a child, you might want to consider Family Sharing. The only downside to Family Sharing is you can't share in app purchases.
