    trying to do backup to icloud and it says it cannot be done but the phone must be plugged in, locked and on Wi-Fi. it is plugged in and on Wi-Fi. not sure how to lock it for this backup.

    Just press the Lock/Power button on the top of the phone.

    To do an automatic iCloud backup, the iPhone will need to be plugged in, connected to Wi-Fi, etcetera, but not for a manual iCloud backup - at least not that I recall.
