    Basically i was wondering how icloud backs upp files. Is it one backup that keeps getting updated with new files from phone or each time a new backup?

    Whatsapp is backingup to the icloud monthly. Does this mean each month a new backup archive or each month the icloud archieve is updated with new information?

    Basically, yes. Each new back up overrides the previous. It's what is currently on your device at the time of the back up.
    I have no clue about WhatsApp. I don't use it.

    The WhatsApp back up is not the same as backing up your phone. Maybe this will help.

    If you're looking for iterative backups, go through iTunes and store to your computer. Otherwise, with iCloud, it backs up the phone's content at the time of the backup. No iterative backups.
    I do both.
