icloud contacts merged automatically

I m using iphone 4s from past 6 months
i have uploaded my 17000 contacts on icloud and i m also using these contact on iphon, ipad Air and MS Outlook 2007
it working properly on all, but i have notice a problem that my some contact are getting merge automatically without any notification
eg. Vijay Chavan & Vijay or Vijay Chavan & Vijay purohit. i can see "---" this kind of thing in my contact notes which contacts are merged
please anybody can help me, why this happened ?

IOS allows unlimited contact entries so there shouldn't be a problem

Check and see if you have short name toggled on in settings
