iCloud Calendar email alerts

I have lost the ability to send myself email alerts through iCloud calendar. They worked fine using iCal in the past, but no longer do using iCloud calendar. There does not appear to be a way to have an alert be via email. Is there a way to send an email alert via iCloud calendar?

There is not, and it's the one thing that's really kept me from switching to it from Google Calendar.
