    And to expand on that, the user you send the iMessage to has to have their read receipts turned on. I believe it is turned off by default.

    Read receipt is only to show they read a message, it doesn't have to be on to see the little delivered notice under a text in iMessage.

    I hate how it is turned off by default. I really should have been turned on my default, and if you want it off, turn it off.

    It's a privacy thing that it's off by default. I prefer they be over cautious than anything else.
