Not just why but what are these apps uploading that it is around 40MB each. In many instances that is 10 times the size of the app itself. What could possibly be that large?

On top of that several of those apps I have not used since upgrading to iOS 5; Xfinity, Skype, Angry Birds...

That's nothing to do with iCloud. That's the spaced used in your phone for the app.

Hmm, ok is that actual size of the app on the phone or data that they have generated? Still confused by it. If it's the data would that be backed up to iCloud?

no.. thats just the amount of space the app is taking up on the phone...like files on a hard drive...
Nothing to do with icloud backup.

Look in the icloud settings, you can see what apps are set to use icloud to backup, and you can turn off what you dont want....

Settings > iCloud > Synce Page (for syncing mail etc) > Storage and Backup (shows how much iCloud you are using ) > Manage Storage > select phone > shows the amount used for other apps....

    very confusing really!
