    Do I need to purchase some type of hub? Would my Apple tv function in that capacity?

    Apple TV acts like a hub indeed.
    If there is no hub included in the package, your Apple TV will suffice.

    Don't know yet... maybe a garage door opener and a few lights, just to get my feet wet. Don't have a lot of money to invest in this right now, just looking into it.

    Go to the Apple Store website and see what HomeKit accessories they're selling. You can also see what's included in the package.

    Every accessory has its own content, there is no way for us to tell here what you can expect.
