If you have the hue already set up and working, try deleting the app and using the HomeKit.
If it tells you to install the hues app, then there is your answer.

I wasn't trying to rush anyone. I wasn't sure where to post it for the best answer. Here or in the hue's forum section

I keep the Philips Hue app installed, because HomeKit isn't 100% reliable, and having the Hue app comes in handy when HomeKit lets you down. Any reason you don't want to keep the Hue app installed?
