Welcome to iMore!

Here it is a simple as I can put it.

  • HomeKit is Apple's framework for home automation
  • It is already available via select smart accessories
  • Allows all your smart accessories to talk to each other
  • Makes it easier for you to simultaneously control them
  • You use Siri voice commands to control accessories

It really depends which smart home devices you have. If you recently bought a Philips Hue starter kit, or an August Smart Lock, for example, you're already good to go. There are special "works with HomeKit"-type logos on boxes of products that are compatible with HomeKit. A big part of HomeKit is hardening the security of these home automation systems with end-to-end encryption; that's why some of your existing hardware isn't compatible.

Don't worry it's not a noob question at all. HomeKit is still very new and Apple hadn't shared a lot of information on it. Here is a video I made explaining it:

Search YouTube for ConnectSense and what is HomeKit (sorry I can't post links yet since I am new to iMore)

We are make a HomeKit plug so I have been working for it for over a year now. Please let me know if you have other questions, I am happy to answer!
