I'm a real big newbie. Just getting into programming, and would like to do some work on connected things around my house. Why is it called HomeKit anyway?

I *assume* it is because it can control the connected accessories within your home.

Kit is a reference to a collection of things... in this case - development tools to create apps to control things about the home... thus HomeKit.
