The read receipts feature in iMessage for iOS and macOS lets your contacts know whether or not you’ve read messages that they have sent you. Read receipts have always gotten mixed reviews but many find them helpful, especially in business settings. Either way, it’s useful to understand how to turn the feature on and off.
In iOS:
1. Launch the Settings app on your device
2. Tap on Messages
3. Toggle read receipts on or off based on your preferences
If read receipts are turned on your contact will be able to see that you’ve read their message, and at what time.
In macOS:
1. Launch the Messages app
2. From the menu bar, click on Messages, then select Preferences
3. Click on Accounts, select your iMessage account, then check or uncheck the box next to Read Receipts based on your preferences
