Many of us likely have an Apple TV by now and one of the most convenient things you can do is using an iOS device as a remote for it. It's will help you search for things much more quickly given that you will be able to use the devices keyboard for text entry instead of the Apple TV's built in keyboard.
1. Download the Remote app from the App Store
2. Once you have downloaded the app, sign into your Apple ID and and make sure Home Sharing is turned on
3. The app will find all of the devices on your network that have Home Sharing turned on automatically
4. If you have not done so in the past, make sure Home Sharing is turned on in your Apple TV settings
This is a convenient app to use and given that you are likely to have an iOS device nearby while watching, this is probably the way to go for most users.
