Gmail sync issue

I may have my stuff setup wrong, but i'm using gmail calendar and exchange calendar on my ipad and each time i setup an event on my ipad it doubles it shortly after i enter it, almost as if exchange is sending it back to me. i tried turning off exchange but it disables all gmail calendars on the ipad and deletes both events. whats the best way to setup the gmail account so that i can keep contacts and calendars and email sorted out without doubling them up.
