gmail and contacts

If I was to make a brand new GMail account and go to iTunes and

info tab-sync contacts

does this take all the contacts on my iphone and put them on the gmail account? So just in-case I lose all my contacts on the my phone I can just sync from the account and have them again?

You can sync your contacts with gmail without itunes and in the event one goes down the other should have them.

To be extra safe you could export them from google into a vCard or CSV file.

In the event that say you have to replace your phone, you could re-configure the exchange server on the new phone and it would pull all he contacts from gmail into the phone.
