.......after I put hammer to it, lol
So that iPad that I could not unlock cuz my mother didn’t have the password....I decided to get rid of it. I can tell you they don’t make them like they used to. It took quite a beating before it began to show dents and the screen show signs of cracks. But then the weirdest thing happened. It began to expand like a bag of popcorn and then white thick smoke all over the place. Thank goodness I did it out in the garage and I had a fire extinguisher handy......

Was this from a third party seller? I personally only buy electronics that way if the seller states that the item is untouched in the original packaging.

In addition, don't try to dispose of electronics yourself: they contain hazardous materials. Instead, look for a local store or other place that recycles them. In the Chicago area, SWANCC offers occasional electronic recycling, and Abt Electronics and Appliances always takes them.

Huh? I don’t understand what is your point?

My point is that buying from a third party seller is very risky. The problem you and your mother had, that she couldn't unlock it, is pretty common in such cases.

But she forgot her password because she bought it from a 3rd party seller.

If she forgot her own password, she could have contacted Apple Support to reset it. If there isn't an Apple Store near her, she could have used the app. As you found out, trying to destroy the device is dangerous!

The password to her Apple ID or the device password? Either way, why not just reset the Apple ID password or restore the iPad in the case of device passcode?

My wife had set it up for her years ago and she doesn’t remember what email she used . She tried several different email addresses and no luck

The email should be the Apple ID for the device.

Quite frankly, if you hit a device, any device, that contains a Lithium battery indoors, whether in a garage or dwelling, you deserve all you get.

Might have been a bit of fun but could have ended so, so badly. Fire extinguisher on hand or not.

Thankfully for you you got away with it this time...

You’re missing the point of this entire thread, or you’re deliberately not reading posts from the OP.

He said he tried everything to retrieve the password. He also never said he bought it from a third party reseller. And last but not least, he makes it quite clear in this thread that he doesn’t / didn’t care about recycling the device.

Regarding your last statement, the point is that what the OP did is *dangerous* and may have released toxic chemicals!

That’s his responsibility. No harm no foul. He didn’t endanger others.

In case you haven't noticed, other readers may use this thread, as with other Tapatalk threads, for advice on how they should handle problems and concerns. This is a bad idea. My statement, as with the others you quoted, is directed not only to the OP, but to others reading the thread.

Yeah, let’s change the title to ‘Danger, Danger, don’t try this at home’, shan’t we?
Sometimes it’s okay to live a little.

And OP made it quite clear that it was more dangerous than he expected, so there is that.
