So that iPad that I could not unlock cuz my mother didn’t have the password....I decided to get rid of it. I can tell you they don’t make them like they used to. It took quite a beating before it began to show dents and the screen show signs of cracks. But then the weirdest thing happened. It began to expand like a bag of popcorn and then white thick smoke all over the place. Thank goodness I did it out in the garage and I had a fire extinguisher handy......

In addition, don't try to dispose of electronics yourself: they contain hazardous materials. Instead, look for a local store or other place that recycles them. In the Chicago area, SWANCC offers occasional electronic recycling, and Abt Electronics and Appliances always takes them.

My point is that buying from a third party seller is very risky. The problem you and your mother had, that she couldn't unlock it, is pretty common in such cases.

If she forgot her own password, she could have contacted Apple Support to reset it. If there isn't an Apple Store near her, she could have used the app. As you found out, trying to destroy the device is dangerous!

My wife had set it up for her years ago and she doesn’t remember what email she used . She tried several different email addresses and no luck

He said he tried everything to retrieve the password. He also never said he bought it from a third party reseller. And last but not least, he makes it quite clear in this thread that he doesn’t / didn’t care about recycling the device.
