Why is my email showing that I have new mail when I don't?

the home screen shows I have 55 emails but when I click on the icon there are none

I have this now and then usually with an account I disable and enable periodically. What happens when you log in on a computer to check the email? Are they there?

Usually a force quit of the app and reboot helps.

That is a bug of some sort that has been around for quite some time. You can delete the email account from the device and then re-configure it to remove the erroneous badge count.
