New to numbers, trying to get away from excel. Why doesn't Numbers send files unzipped?

New to numbers, trying to get away from excel.

I normally send all my spreadsheets in excel but when I send the same spreadsheets in numbers they are zipped. Why does excel send the same file unzipped and numbers doesn't?
