I was charging my iPhone using a 12-24 charger in a lorry cab, but the connector at the iPhone end of the cable overheated and now i cannot switch the phone back on.

Electronics and heat do not go together well. I would suggest making a Genius Bar appointment or taking it to a certified repair shop.

Welcome to iMore! If I were to guess I'd say you have a fried battery. Just as @firedept10 suggested, take your iPhone into an Apple Store. You may also want to look in your Lightning port and make sure you don't see any melted plastic or any other substance jammed up in there.
