touch id does not recognize my fingerprint

I don't know if this happened after an update but all I get now is the message "enter passcode Touch ID does not recognize your fingerprint. how do I set up a passcode?

As passcode was made when you setup your finger print so you should know it

It's a 4 digit number code. You had to use it when you set up the fingerprint to begin with. Have you not set up fingerprint yet?
