Looking to buy first iPhone but have heard contradictions on which iPhone is the best up to the present time (November 2015), and also which iPhone of the older versions is the best 4, 4S, 5, 5S?

I would get the 6S or 6S Plus depending on your size preferences. If your budget doesn't allow for it, try for the 6 or 6Plus. I wouldn't personally buy anything older than the 5S.

Welcome to iMore! Apple has done a great job of building upon the strengths of its previous devices so I can confidently say that they always outdo themselves. My 6s Plus is the best phone I've ever owned. If you're looking to older devices I wouldn't go with anything older than a 5s (which is still a great phone, by the way).

Agree with DevilishBanker I wouldn't go older than the 5s. I have the 6s and it is the best one I have ever owned.
