Why are some of my texts in blue and some in green

Sometimes the background on my text message is blue and sometimes green. Sometimes the blue ones don't want to deliver

Green is using your carrier's SMS texting - Blue is using iMessage through Apple.

If it's green, then the other person is not using an iPhone.
iMessage is iPhone to iPhone.

Like the two other replies said, green is when you are texting a non-iPhone or you do not have significant data coverage at the moment.

When the bubble is blue you are texting another iPhone and you have the data to allow you to send an iMessage.

That can happen if the user recently switched from iPhone to another brand and didn't turn off iMessage first. Your iPhone will still try to deliver via iMessage (instead of a standard Text), which won't work on non-Apple phones.

But if it does work "sometimes" then it's something else going on

Be sure you have a strong wifi and cellular signals. Some lag issues are solved by a Reset Network Settings.
