Pop up fear

I was using safari and a white box pop up appeared saying I had been using sites related to illegal porn. I had not been viewing anything illegal at all and simply closed safari and cleared my history. Because I did this so quickly in fear of a virus I didn't read the whole pop up and can't say if it was asking for money. Usually I wouldn't think twice about this but it is the fact the white box pop up looke so genuine (identical box that appears when your iOS update is available but was a bit longer) any way would this be a scam pop up or do apple ever send things like this?

There's no telling. What sites had you been to? What were you doing in Safari when the pop up showed? Did you get a screen shot? I've never seen that pop up before.

Thanks. Definitely not the case so I hope therefore it is a hoax thing like the police spoof ones you can read about online.

Many thanks. My main concern was also if fraudulent pop ups can imitate apple one like above - daft as I may sound I thought that might be hard to do?

What you are looking at is called "Ransom Ware". It's a scam. Here are 3 tips to avoid it in the future...

1.) Clear your browser history (completely).
2.) Restart your browser application.
3.) Stop visiting shady porno or illegal download websites (IE: torrents, streams, etc).

Hi,

I received this message last night as well which is freaking me out, have you heard anything more from it? I wasn't looking at anything illegal and after I clicked ok it shut my safari down. I quickly cleared my history and refreshed the browser with no other issues, but it's really worrying me!

Thank you!

Re: Pop up fear

I have seen this a lot at work when repairing phones and it comes from porn sites, it's maleware, you have to reset your phone to get rid of it. Most of the time I only see it on android phones but as of lately I been seeing it on iPhones as well.

Re: Pop up fear

The thing that worries me was the location, it came up as Durham which whilst 70 miles south of me, is still relatively close, it looks quite real :S
