App.net launches Passport app for iPhone, lets you manage accounts, browse for clients, and more!

Now, using the Passport app from App.Net allows you to sign up without an invite code. You're still limited to all the things a free user is limited to, but you no longer have to hound your friends for invites. App.Net will see how this affects service, and can revoke this at any time.

This is a step in the right direction for them, but I think it's too little, too late for App.net. It's been a great venture but it hasn't picked up yet and I don't think it will.

Agreed. The vast majority if people aren't going to pay for it and without advertising I do t see how they can be self-supporting. The free account is too limiting for people to really get a feel for the service.

I think the biggest issue is that they are nearly an exact copy of Twitter. Everyone's already setup with Twitter and the general public won't switch. All my friends on App.net are my "geeky" friends and not anyone I consider a general user. Maybe they can tweak the approach and make some changes to get a better target and grab more users.

Everyone I know also said its just too much effort to keep things posted to Twitter and then repost specific things to App.net.
