The Game Boy has just celebrated the 25th anniversary of a highly illustrious history filled with the most iconic handheld devices in gaming and, really, in all of tech. It had seen a total of about nine devices, with the trademark 8 bit processing innards common among the versions until the Game Boy Advance, which saw a move to 32 bit. It was single-handedly the textbook example of iteration. The series even saw a move to color pixel displays with the Game Boy Color, an unprecedented milestone for handheld gaming, and which paved the way for the Nintendo DS, 3DS, Sony PSP and Vita, the premier full color handhelds of today. Without Nintendo’s advance (pun intended), we would have never been able to enjoy handheld gaming in our lifetimes.
