Why do I have a red exclamation point in the Facebook messenger app?

Exclamation point in the Facebook messenger app.

On my Facebook messenger app, I have a red exclamation point at the bottom for settings. When I click it, the exclamation point is on notifications. I have my notifications on but the exclamation point will not go away. I have tried turning off all the notifications and turning them back on, restarting the app, restarting my phone, and re installing the app and it is still there. Any suggestions?

This exclamation point is annoying. If I turn off "banners" to "none" I get the exclamation point. Turn on "banners" and it goes away. The thing is I don't want banners and so I have to live with the exclamation point.
