Thanks for the quick response. I walked over to an AT&T store and they told me that I HAD to sign a new 2-year contract in order to activate the iPhone. Even if I am bringing my own equipment. Location was an actual AT&T store (I believe) at 1330 Ave of the Americas in NYC.

Should I try another store? Call them up directly? Thanks again for the help!
    Definitely try something else.

The problem may be the use of the word "activation." Your phone has been "activated" and AT&T got their pound of flesh. You are just trying to open an account. You just want service on an already activated iPhone.

Also see my suggestion about pre-paid. I cannot remember the transactions exactly but when I got my second iPhone, after only a year, I was not entitled to any discount and paid full price to Apple in the Apple store. What I needed was a number for the second phone on my existing account. However, their rules were that for an additional number (new line) they had to do a credit check. I was not expecting that. I have a block on my credit records. Taking it off was going to cost money and time. Since I did not want to wait, I prepaid. I did not have to have a contract to activate that phone. When I got my third phone a year later, even though it got almost no subsidy, I signed a contract for it. The second one was still on prepaid month-to-month. I gave it too my nephew and continued to pay for several months. When they moved, his dad moved that phone to a family plan account and got a number in the new area code. No contract. As far as I know, that phone has never been on a contract.

Try another store. There is no rule whatsoever that says you MUST sign a two year contract if you are bringing your own equipment. That's a flat out lie. If the stores still give you some hassle, call them up directly (800-331-0500) and set up the account.

I don't know why they would tell you that, the system will let you do it very easily and they even get paid commission on it.

Yes you can. You won't be under contract either because you would be bringing your won device to the table. You will also be elligible to recieve the lowest price on the new iPhone when it comes in July since you have not received a subsidy from AT&T yet. Be aware that doing this will put you in a contract (which can be cancelled without the ETF if you're movign out of country)
Thanks for the explanation, that was exactly what I was hoping for.

The only question remaining is: When I access the At&t homepage from my company I am automatically redirected to the at&t business homepage where I can see the benefits...does that also work, when I go to a at&t store???

    cheers

ps: whats the problem with at&t in san francisco???

It is hard to conceive that anyone with a choice and who has read this thread would choose AT&T in San Francisco.
Hi...why? what is the problem with AT&T in San Francisco...and what other choice would I have, when I want to my iPhone with Data?

AT&T is notorious for poor service in SF. Data service is often completely unavailable. They need more cells but were building them in Vermont, where they are cheap but used only by cows, rather than in NY and SF where they are expensive. In their defense, for political reasons, it is difficult to invest in NY and SF.

I understand that your iPhone is unlocked. Therefore, you can go to T-Mobile. In theory, their 3G data coverage is not as good as AT&T's but SF is an exception. With an unlocked iPhone, it is cheap to get a couple of pre-paid sims and try both services where you expect to use your phone. Local service trumps everything, particularly my opinion.

Hello, new poster here with a couple questions:

    1) I see it mentioned in this thread and elsewhere that various actions (like canceling before 30 days) will trigger AT&T to charge you for the "retail price" of the iPhone. What is this retail price? How and when do they do this? A charge just shows up on the card you used to buy it?

    2) What happens if you never activate the phone at all?

    3) The Quick Start guide that came with the iPhone refers to "iPhone Returns," "canceling service" and "iPhone exchanges" all within 30 days of *SHIPMENT* not activation.

The AT&T return policy I can find online says "You may cancel service within 30 days from the activation date to avoid the early termination fee of $175"

Is it activation date or shipment date?

    4) When does billing start? Its been well over week since my phone shipped and I haven't activated it. Am I already paying for service?

Thanks. I may think of more questions but that's all for now.

Hey, is there any word around the campfire as to when AT&T is going to take over the Alltel infrastructure, or at least begin to add GSM service in the different rural areas they bought from verizon. I live in southwest Colorado and I'm growing weary of having to use Verizon by default, because they're pretty much the only game in town. It would be great to have an option, and an iphone too!

Well, guys, I'm coming with some bittersweet news. As of a couple weeks ago I've taken a job at Sprint (ironically located across the street from AT&T). As such, I will no longer have access to current AT&T information and so I will no longer be answering questions for you guys as I don't want to give you guys false or out-of-date information. I have to say that it's been a pleasure answering questions for all of you and I hope I've helped a few of you out. You can now find me at AndroidCentral, Precentral, and Crackberry assisting Sprint customers. I'm going to greatly miss my iPhone and especially the TiPB forum community but I'll probably still lurk around here for a little bit because I will still have my iPhone even though it no longer has service.

I wish you all good luck and PHONE DIFFERENT!!!

I have a 3G iPhone, and am using AT&T with FAMILY MSG UNLIMITED and FAMILY DATA UNLIMITD. Is there any way to get visual voicemail with this plan?

It really just varies on how long it will take to ship given that each phone comes from different manufactures. It shouldn't take more than a week on average to get some new phones in stock though. No sure about refurbished ones however.

The quick fix for this is just to download YouMail. It's a free visual voicemail application that allows you to leave individualized voicemails for specific callers. It works great and there are many other features available for it as well. Visual Voicemail For Your Phone | YouMail

Thanks, I'll take a look at that!
But no AT&T (semi)sanctioned way, huh?

Yeah, thanks for the snark. The question is still, is there a way to get AT&Ts Visual Voicemail on my 3G without the full iPhone plan, but with just what I have already (see above).

I have been an ATT customer for a while. From what i understand, if a new customer signs up and gets an iphone and then cancels their account after 30 days, they do not have to return the iphone or pay equipment fee. They will only be responsible for the $175 ETF.

What if i am an existing customer and use my upgrade for an iphone? Can i cancel in the first 30 days and keep the iphone and only pay the ETF? Do i have to wait the 30 days as well? What would happen if i canceled in first 30 days after upgrade? After 30 days? How will this work if i upgrade in middle of billing cycle?

    Thanks,

actually that is incorrect...I am a new customer and I was adviced that I can cancelled within 30 days without paying an ETF..But if I do cancel within the first 30 days I will have to return the iPhone and pay a 10% re-stocking fee..now the only way to get around the 10% re-stocking fee is if you return the phone within the first 7 days..that was explained to me in the shipping papers that I received with my phone..
