Google maps: Can you install offline maps?

I don't know if this is vehicle model specific, but my car manufacturer (Mazda) won't say if Google maps offline maps is a functionality of Google Maps in CP. Mazda does things differently and the fact they're being evasive in not answering the question raises susipicion.

Has anyone downloaded offline maps and successfully used it on CP?

The Google Maps iOS app can be viewed in CarPlay once it is installed on an iPhone. If the offline maps you’re referring to are not part of the Google Maps app for iOS then I doubt you’ll be able to use them via CarPlay.

Thanks, I'm surprised that many people such as yourself aren't aware that downloading areas of maps for offline use is a feature within Google maps and has been now for a few years. I guess that explains why the information I'm seeking is so difficult to find.
