Why can’t I battle

My battle button in Pokémon go is black when I try to battle my best friends how do I fix that issue. I was able to before but haven’t been able for the last week now.

While I haven't played PG in many months, not being able to use a certain function means you may not have the needed items to battle.

But that's just a speculation. Have you reached out to Niantic support?
