I can't ATTACH a photo from my photos (on the phone) to an email I'm sending from my phone. It appears it wants to link to a location such as ICloud in order to do an attachment and the photos folder will not come up. It will only EMBED a photo. This is extremely, extremely frustrating when trying to send quick pics taken from the phone.

Open the Photos app, choose the photo you want to send via email, tap the share button, tap the email icon and send from there.

How large is the photo and does it exceed the attachment size limit set by your email provider, especially if you’re sending more than one attachment?

That procedure does this:

Still embeds.

That's the way the stock mail app works. Have you tried another mail app? And before the "I shouldn't have to do that " comments start, no you shouldn't have to do that but that's that way Apple does things.

That’s true, but it’s no different than attaching it. Instead of seeing an attachment, you see the photo itself. Depending on the email client of the recipient, they will either see the photo or see ‘attachment 1 photo’.
The recipient can then save the photo as usual.

You can also start a new email message from the Mail app and double tap or maybe 3D press in the body of the email and select “insert photo” or “add attachment”. Unfortunately inserting a photo or video will only embed them.
