Is Backups.backupdb the same as a .sparsebundle?

I am attempting to follow the posted directions for "How to selectively restore files from your old Mac" by connecting to a Time Machine backup, and selectively restoring files from my account without using Time Machine. The instructions indicate I should find a Backups.backupdb folder, but I only see a iMac.sparsebundle. I can open the bundle but all I see are /bands folders, etc. which are useless to me.

Not from what I gather. One appears to be a disk image format (sparsebundle) and the other a backup folder (backups.backupdb).
