how to get out of iCloud Drive?

I

iMore Question

I want to get back my desktop and documents folders that are backed up in iCloud Drive and have them just be normal local folders again. I find the online instructions confusing. They say go to system preferences/iCloud and click iCloud Drive/options and then unclick desktop and documents folders. Then there's some convoluted steps to get the files back in appropriate folders. Is that the best way? What about unclicking iCloud Drive? There's a choice to keep files on the Mac? And I'm confused about the difference between iCloud and iCloud Drive. If I disable iCloud Drive will iCloud still work for my iPhone backups? Thanks for any help. Sometime I find Apple software a bit convoluted (like iTunes as well).

iCloud Drive only allows for the files and folders you mentioned that are on your Mac to be visible to all of your other devices. If you disable iCloud Drive in your Mac, any new files and folder you create will simply remain on your Mac and not be visible to your other devices.
